Kurilpa Shared Shade

The Kurilpa Community Centre was designed, combining the existing Kurilpa Library and Kurilpa Community Hall facilities. The existing building are to be upgraded to improve access, functionality and appeal. The aim is to link the two buildings and allow them to share resources and expand their operations, creating a neighbourhood precinct. Any alterations and additions are minimal, maximising the use of the existing. The proposed design for the Kurilpa Community Centre realises the council’s vision for an inclusive, vibrant community hub that welcomes people of all backgrounds and ages. The design focuses on creating a physical link between the two existing facilities, allowing for equitable access and greater sharing of resources.

There is a balance between practical service provisions with meaningful placemaking – relating both to the local West End context and to First Nations history. The proposed building interventions are just enough to meet the client’s spacial requirements, thus maximising the space dedicated to landscape.
